Question: I've watched this movie numerous times but I cannot figure out why Saphire calls William "Opie" when she first sees him at the Sports Arena in San Diego. It sticks throughout the movie, but what does it mean?

She sees him as a young, naive innocent, so the reference is to Opie Taylor (Ronnie Howard) from the Andy Griffith show. He was none too worldly either.
Opie was the character played by Ron Howard in The Andy Griffith Show.
