How come, in movies, the...?!

Question: black man is always somehow killed off, even if he's a good guy? Is Hollywood racist. I've watched a lot of movies, and this seems to happen in most of them. Just an observation; is this true?

That is not at all true! I actually made a very long list to prove that it isn't so. I'm not sure why this persists because so many films have a black person being the only survivor, including "AVP". You don't hear protests about that, do you?

Here are just some films I've listed for previous responses to this claim. I'm sure that I will recall many more in which the black character~male and/or females survive to the end or have other characters killed off before they are:
Alien vs. Predator~Sanaa Latham is the ONLY human being who survives!
Shaft trilogy
Shaft (remake)
Anaconda
Anacondas: Hunt for the Black Orchid
Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy
Swashbuckler
Thir13en Ghosts (2001)
The Fog (2005)
Candyman~Tony Todd as Candyman survives for the sequels.
Independence Day~Will Smith
I, Robot
The Stand (TV miniseries)
Poltergeist
Scream 2
The Beastmaster
Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight
Voodoo Moon (TV movie)
Predator 2
Aliens
Alien 3
Alien Resurrection
Urban Legend
Urban Legends: Final Cut
It (TV miniseries)
Ganja & Hess
Jaws: The Revenge
Beware! The Blob aka Son of the Blob
Night of the Cobra Woman
Black Mamba
The Mummy Returns
Deep Blue Sea
Live & Let Die
Blacula~It is his decision to (supposedly) end his life, but he rises for the sequel.
Gothika
Santa's Slay
King of the Zombies
I Walked With a Zombie
Serpent & the Rainbow
Vamp
Queen of the Damned
The Breed
Blade trilogy
The Clairvoyant
What Lies Beneath
Gargoyles (TV movie)
The Supernaturals
From Dusk TIll Dawn
From Dusk TIll Dawn 3 (I haven't seen the second one.)
The Omega Man
I Am Legend~Will Smith
I, Robot
The World, the Flesh & the Devil~One of the last three people left in the series is a black man who does not get killed off!
Bones (2001)
The Bone Snatcher
Something Wicked This Way Comes
Ghosts of Mars
Sugar Hill
Snakes on a Plane
The Twilight People
The Beast Must Die
The Vindicator
The Crow series
I Still Know What You Did Last Summer
The Golden Child~treated by the other actors as a drama, except for Eddie Murphy, who jokes his way through it unscathed. Does Eddie Murphy get killed off in any of his movies?
Pitch Black~I don't recall if Keith David's character survives through "The Chronicles of Riddick".
Fallen~This is likely the only film in which Denzel Washington dies, isn't it? The cop ends his life so that the demon won't be able to use his body to escape~or so he believes. So, how is this any different from Bruce Willis sacrificing his life in "Armageddon" or Jason Willer in "The Exorcist"?
The Strange Case of Doctor Rx
Phantom Killer
The Spider (1945)
Revenge of the Zombies
Resident Evil: Armageddon (I haven't seen the other two.)
Sorceress (1995)
Event Horizon
The Matrix series
Lethal Weapon Series
Vegas Vampires
Bad Dreams (1988)
The People Under the Stairs
Dawn of the Dead (2004)
Q aka The Winged Serpent

A black actor in a lead role generally survives. No one fusses about the number of others who get killed along the way. Others who survive movies on a regular basis are:
Laurence Fishburne
Samuel L. Jackson
James Earl Jones
Will Smith
Danny Glover
Keith David
Wesley Snipes
Orlando Jones
Don Cheadle
Billy Dee Williams
Perhaps I can continue this list after a few hours sleep, something I've been promising myself for a couple of hours.

The movies I have listed range from more than 60 years ago to 2007, and I know there are many I've left off the list that others will recall. Part of this was in response to another question, claiming that black characters in "scary movies" get killed off first! That isn't true either! This question seems quite prejudicial. Most people don't seem to have problems with others being killed during a film, including the good guys. I think you need to watch movies more carefully and balance out those losses. Some fuss that helpless young women get butchered far too much and are shown having difficulty fighting. Then, there are those who refer to the "final girl" theme. No one ever will be happy about who does or doesn't get killed in a film!

If I could go film by film, but that would be time-consuming, and it probably wouldn't change any views. I do keep trying. I'll add more from other genres as I think of them.

NO -In negotiator samel .l.jackson doesnt get killed,In Armageddon the black is alive,In Matrix the black is alive,In xxx the black is alive,In fast and the furious the black is alive,In charlies angels the black is alive there are hundreds where the black is alive.

deep blue sea he even mentions this problem in the movie, he survives. so does the "criminal" who wrangles the sharks.

ok...

16 Blocks- Mos Def (black) is being hunted down by several cops, he lives

Snakes On A Plane- Samuel Jackson lives after being attacked by killer snakes

Waist Deep- Tyrese Gibson is being hunted down by gangsters and cars he drives his car into the water and still lives!!

thats just a few...

also the ones numerolo.. wrote

I know what you are saying, in fact my Multicultural Counseling class had a discussion about the fact that black men are usually killed off in movies. There are not to many movies where the black man actually gets to live.

Denzel has died in a movie before.
He dies at the end of Training Day, Fallen and Glory.

I don't know if it's racism these days or if the Black people just get cast in roles of characters that are meant to die. I mean, if you aren't meant to die in a movie, then maybe you are a main character. How many Blockbuster movies do we see these days that have main characters who are black? I'm talking about those 100-200 million dollar budget movies. I think studios pick demographics that the majority can identify with.

I seriously doubt a lot of people would have gone to see LOTR if the main characters were black, or the Matrix or Armageddon. I mean you have some people in those movies who are black (not in LOTR) but they arent the main characters and are thus expendable.

Its the same with Asian, Hispanic and Arab actors. Its just the way of the world.

true, Denzel never dies, but he did get possessed in that movie Fallen. But I don't know why the black person always is one of the first to die, that's usually something that happens a lot in horror films. It's usually the black guy, the ditzy chick, and the dork that end up dying. it's a hollywood stereotype i guess.

leoprince, i think people are kind of missing your point. if the lead actor is black of course they don't die, because then where will the movie go? it's usually a lesser character of african descent that gets killed off first. it's true.

I have seen it too but more obvious is that Disney almost always kills off the mom. I can't seem to figure that one out. Disney must have had something against his own mother or something.

I'll have to take notice of that from now on. God Bless.
