Well there was circulation that Welling didn' t want to be typecast, and that Bryan Singer wanted an unknown, but the main reason I think is because of scheduling conflicts.
I've got to disagree. The movie would have sucked no matter who they cast. You can't blame Brandon Routh there was nothing in the script to give him an opportunity to act. Singer just wanted someone to stand there and look vaguely like Christopher Reeves. Also the films are meant to be in a different continuity than Smallville, casting the actor from the series would have caused confusion.
