Question about making a movie? Can you use songs by famous artists?!


Question: could i use a eric clapton or tupac song or something similar? i will be putting this movie on DVD (not selling it)

do i have to make my own music? or can i just list the songs in the credits afterwards?

I believe that, as long as the film you're making won't be used to make profit in any way, it's perfectly legal to use songs (and it wouldn't hurt to list the songs used in the film in the credits).

If you have their permission, if not you shouldn't.

Even if its a low budget movie where no one is going to see it but it is creative identity would be in question if you decide to use a famous person's work without giving them the right amount of monitary compensation.

You can use music of artist that are local and willing to lend their work to you other than that, I wouldn't.

In 1987, a young man made a movie for a class project and used the works of Michael Jackson, through teachers, friends, etc, Michael Jackson found out his work was used without his notice, he sued and won $132,000.

It isn't like you are selling the work but still a lot of artist take pride in their work, and if you are using it for your own good with out their wishes, its almost like taking advantage of the artist with them not having a say.
