That's a great question. Seeing as how Philip Pullman is atheist, and said that the series is "about killing God", many Christian-based families are stepping clear of the film, feeling as though, by buying tickets, they are sticking money in his pockets.
Personally, I find them to be a fantastic trilogy of books; read them when I was in middle school... I believe that the consensus will be split down the middle.
Think of it as the atheist "Chronicles of Narnia"; were the author not to publicly announce the story's connotations, some audience members wouldn't even realize that there was a religious statement behind it.
Not only that, but the atheistic themes have been minimized in the recent film version.
im going to see it! im episcopalian and i dont care if the author is atheist let him be entitled to his own opinions! saying something that good is wrong because of religious predujice is just as wrong as saying homosexuals are wrong or saying that someones wrong because theyre black
its disguisting that some catholic schools have taken the book out just because of the athiest author thats really sad
1st of all, don't think the movie is anarchy or something. I will see it. I read this article and saw on the news that the Christian Bishops loved the movie and thought that the movie was very well made. The people trying to boycott, or cancel the movie, haven't even watched The Golden Compass. Don't believe me? Look it up. Same thing for The Davinci code, Passion of the Christ.
