The year is 1805. During the Napoleonic Wars, Captain "Lucky Jack" Aubrey leads the British frigate HMS Surprise on a trek to hunt down the French warship Acheron. The two ships stalk one another shortly off the coast of South America, seeing as how they are each unique ships from rival countries with claims on that particular region. Surgeon Stephan Maturin lands on the island, and coincidentally discovers new species of plants and animals that he, and the young amputee who accompanies him, finds absolutely fasinated. Stung by inner demons, Captain Aubrey must now decide between retreat back to England, or continuing the hunt for the Acheron. In the end, they not only find the Acheron, but defeat it. However, it is soon discovered that the man posing as the French captain was a fraud, and that soon after, the Acheron's captain takes off with the captured ship. In other words, the saga continues...
