Superman Quote...?!
Question: So I have been trying to breakdown this quote from superman said by Jor-El, "The son becomes the father. And the father, the son."
What does that mean?

I think it ties into Protector and Protected, as well as that children, no matter how much they fight it tend to end up being similar people to their parents if only in a specific aspect of their personality.
in the context of Jor-El saying this to the child he's sending away and will never know personally, he's telling Clark/Kal-El that even though they will never 'meet', that they are connected, and will forever be so.
In Superman Returns, when Superman says it to Jason as he sleeps , He's telling him that even though he may not be able to be with him as a father he will always be their for him if only in spirit.
It is also one of the many parallels between the Superman mythos and Judea-Christian Canon.
I think w/in the Superman Universe its possible that it is perhaps a baptismal prayer of sorts. Identifying the child before their god as a member of the Faith/Clan/Tribe/Race/etc. and when Jor-El says it, he's also telling (his) god, "This is my son, of your people, keep him safe.", and Superman is again invoking that feeling, "This is my son, of MY people, help Me to keep him safe."

Personally I think it means that the son grows up and takes care of the father and the father becomes the son that needs taking care of. Say when our parents get older and we then in turn take care of them like children, the way that they took care of us when we were children. This is just my thoughts on the quote, I have seen the movie.
maybe when a father gets old then the son takes care of the father like a son
