Will Smith in Independence Day (the movie)?!

Question: I like Will Smith as a comedian.

However, I think his character took away from the seriousness of an alien invasion, especially when he told one of the aliens:
"Welcome to Earth." and then punched the alien in the face.

That was funny, no doubt. However, the movie is about aliens coming to our planet for the purpose of killing the human race and I just think that the Will Smith role decreased the seriousness of an alien attack.

Your view?

I think he was put in the movie as comic relief so some people would not walk around paranoid of real alien attacks! You know how some people take movies too seriously like the situation will cross over in real life. The scene with the White House being blown up was disturbing and Will's character kind of put ease on the terrible things that was going on in the movie.

it's a hollywood action film, how could it not have lines like that

Will Smith is not a comedian. He was a rapper. He became and actor and was put on a sitcom but that doesn't make him a comedian.

Yeah, I think just becuase something serious like that is happening it doesn't mean you can't be humorous. I'm sure I would still be making jokes (I hope at least) If humor was taking out we wouldn't have the Die Hard movies! But yes, at stated before it's also a movie, and they want to keep it fresh. I think that line is one of the least flaws of the movie. That one line doesn't take away from all the other ridiculous stuff in that movie. I love the movie dont get me wrong.

I enjoyed that movie. I think he brought a sense of humor to a great action film.

it a hollywood action/sci-fi film. it was meant to have lines like that. in my perrsonal opinion, the movie was made purely to entertain the audience.

this would have been a great movie(it basically was a remake of the first "war of the worlds")if the comedic lines had not been installed. how can one joke about being invaded by aliens who have come to destroy mankind?great special effects but bad taste as far as trying to lighten up the movie with comedic humor.

I think he is a good actor. In my opinion, the line you are talking about was said to be funny. Maybe you are overthinking this movie. I liked it, but I dont think it was meant to be taken seriously. Look at the other characters-they all had lines like this. Jeff Goldblum was very sarcastic in parts and I dont think it took anything away from the movie. To me, it made it better. And I got a good laugh out of Randy Quaid's role too. I think this movie was more comedy than drama, but that is just my opinion. War of the Worlds had a much more serious tone to it than Independence Day did. There werent any funny lines in it that I can remember. That was a more "serious" movie to me. I think Independence Day was meant to be taken lightly and to give us a good laugh in a few places. Have a great day!

This was a throwback movie, when logic is not really a factor. Will wasn't any more out of place than jeff Goldblum, Brent Spiner or Judd Hirsch

And the women, for the most part, were mere window decoration

this was a summer sci-fi action blockbuster, fun for teens and adults. not meant to be taken too seriously, and Will Smith wasn't the only one with funny lines.
