Answers: Continuity of a main story line and timeline with additional spices like new characters, new subquests and a grand climax.
Suspense and good description. And add in new characters...
Most good trilogies are mapped out before the first movie is even made. Bad sequels are simply a way to milk the audience for more money...and it always shows.
Star Wars has to be the blueprint...
1. Introduce unsuspecting future hero and/or villlain(s)
2. enhance characters, establish conflict
3. Showdown between good and evil
Great format...not the only format, but, well done.
A good story and Peter Jackson directing (LOL)
