i am just now getting into it...is it similar to harry potter? because I am a HUGE fan of hp.
but like..where does it start? whats the name of the first movie and/or book? Where do I start to get into it?
whats movies/books in order? And is the whole thing over? or is there more coming out?

The 6-chapter "Star Wars" Saga is the tragic story of Anakin Skywalker and his fall from grace. Since you are discovering this fantastic movie series (despite what others may say) I will not even attempt to explain anything. All I can say is PAY ATTENTION TO EVERYTHING!!! There are so many things going on and so many characters to take in that will either appear in later movies or at least be referenced again later.

You should definately watch them in order (1 through 6). Keep in mind that 4 through 6 were make quite a while ago, so the effects will look dated compared to the first three. If you can get past that, you'll do fine.

One thing to try, after you watch "Episode 2: Attack of the Clones", you should rent "Star Wars: Clone Wars" volumes 1 and 2. These are cartoons that further the story and lead straight into "Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith". While this is not necessary, it will give you some info on things you'll see in "Episode 3"

I am a HUGE Star Wars fan (or geek, if you prefer), so please don't hesitate to send me a message through Yahoo if you have any questions about anything. I will be happy to help you get as much enjoyment as I and millions of other fans have gotten from George Lucas' little corner of the universe.

Star Wars is a series of sci-fi movies that George Lucas began in the 1970's.
The first movie is "Star Wars: A New Hope" but he later released "The Empire Strikes Back" and "The Return of the Jedi". He was originally supposed to create 9 movies and he started with 4, 5, and 6. However he stopped producing movies for almost 20 years until he revived the series with "The Phantom Menace", "Attack of the Clones" and "The Revenge of the Sith" in the late 90's and early 2000's.
Those three movies are actually episodes 1, 2, and 3 of the formerly 9 part series, though we don't know for sure if Lucas plans to finish what he started.
Star Wars has a cult following rather like HP or Star Trek, though I don't think the 3 are comparable in any way aside from their mass appeal.
I say, try it out.
I love Star Wars and everything about it, but then again, my Mom forced me to study them from an early age.
I guess fanatics breed fanatics or something.

There's also supposedly a TV series in the works that Lucas is heading, but I'm not sure how true that statement is. It's just something I heard recently.

-Edit-
I thought this might be useful. I don't know why I didn't just link you to it before...

it starts (officially) at episode 4, and the other movies are prequils. you can watch it in the order it was made, and not have any surprises spoiled for you:

episode IV
episode V
episode VI
episode I
episode II
episode III

or you can watch it in order 1-6. the books are a separate continuity from the movies and it depends on which book where it falls in the series. I suggest you watch the movies before you read the books. and there are a lot of books. my only suggestion is that between episodes 2 and 3 you watch star wars: clone wars which is an animated series supposed to fill in the gaps between 2 and 3.

you can start with the first episode 1 also called The Phantom Menance, then in order:
part 2 attack of the clones
part 3 revenge of the sith
part 4 a new hope
part 5 the empire strikes back
part 6 return of the jedi

George originally envisioned a 9-film movie arc, but time and age has forced him to only do six.

Books came after the movies.

Despite the order sequence, see Star wars (Also known as SW IV or "A New Hope")

STAR WARS is a hoaky and cheaply made sci fi flick heavily based on a lot of other movies. It does have some entertainment value but is nowhere near as original or imaginative as the STAR TREK series.
