Movie boycott?!

Question: I have been reading a lot about the Catholic League calling for a boycott of the Golden Compass. My question is this... has a boycott of a movie ever been successful? By success I mean made it less popular than expected. It seems that boycotts are really just free advertising. Your thoughts?

The only time a boycott seems to work is when the film in question seems to be so controversial that theatres shy away from showing it. (e.g. "Last Temptation of Christ," some NC-17 films.)

I don't think a boycott in the sense of a lot of people choosing not to go has ever worked, in terms of hurting it financially.

The purported boycott of "The Golden Compass" really makes me laugh. Can your religious faith really not stand the scrutiny of a fictional adaptation of a children's book with armored polar bears? Or can your religious faith not withstand any logical free-thinking scrutiny at all?

Not to mention - who calls for a boycott without having seen the movie? How do you know it's so bad anyways?

I thought it actually brings more attention to the movie and people go to see it, to see what all the hype is about, so it actually helps out the movie........

catholics are stupid....
