thanks so much!

Mack (Kevin Kline) is an affluent attorney who lives in L.A. He has a wife Claire (Mary McDonnell) and a son Roberto (Jeremy Sisto).

One night driving home, he takes a wrong turn and his car breaks down in a dangerous neighborhood. As he's waiting for the tow truck, gang members come and threaten him with a gun. Just in the nick of time, the truck arrives, driven by Simon (Danny Glover). He persuades the gang members to leave them alone, since he just needs to do his job.

Simon has a deaf daughter who is away at college. He has a sister with two kids who lives not far from the dangerous neighborhood where Mack broke down.

Claire is jogging one day and she hears a baby crying. She discovers an abandoned little girl in the bushes, takes her home and washes and feeds her and feels very happy. She waits hours for Mack to get home from work, so he can see the baby, and then calls the police. But she's attached, and thinks that she's meant to adopt the baby. Their son is 16, and Mack was looking forward to it just being the two of them, and he doesn't want a baby.

Mack decides he should get to know Simon, to thank him for saving his life. They are otherwise two guys who would never meet. They have breakfast together, and get to know each other.

When Mack hears about where Simon's sister and niece and nephew live, he offers that a friend owns an apartment building in a safe (and white) neighborhood) if she wants to move out. At first she refuses the offer, but when someone tries to sell her life insurance for her little girl, and their house is shot up by gang members, she decides to move.

Mack is on the verge of an affair with his secretary Dee (Mary Louise Parker). (They had sex once.) She has a friend at work, Jane (Alfre Woodard) and Mack offers to set her up with Simon. Dee is jealous he's finding boyfriends for other women, and also realizes she'll never be with Mack. She quits her job and moves on.

Simon and Jane feel awkward on their blind date, and realize Mack doesn't know either of them that well. They figure they're probably the only two black people he knows. And even though she's white collar and he's blue collar, they hit it off and fall in love.

Mack and Claire have a movie producer friend Davis (Steve Martin) who produces violent action movies. He gets mugged in broad daylight, and shot in the leg. He almost loses the leg, resolves to stop promoting violence...and then ultimately doesn't change at all. He goes back to making stupid shoot-'em-ups.

As Mack is trying to teach Roberto to drive (a stressful process in L.A.), his son asks why he doesn't want to adopt the baby. After a near-accident, Mack realizes you can't plan out every moment of your life, or always be safe. And he realizes that if Claire really wants the baby, they will adopt her.

Simon says he wants to thank Mack for bringing Jane into his life. He drives Mack, Claire, Roberto, the baby with Jane, his sister and her kids to the Grand Canyon.

When he first met Mack, after he towed his car, he described how he had been to the Grand Canyon, and seeing it - the enormity, the time it took to create - makes you realize your own insignificance in the world, that your problems are quite small and your time on earth is short.

The movie ends with them all looking out over the canyon.
