This movie I think your talking about is Heart and Souls. They die in a bus crash not a train crash though. Its about four people Milo, Penny, Julia, & Harrison. In 1959 these four people board a bus that later crashes & they all die & at the same time a baby is born, Robert Downey Jr., the four are tied to the baby in some way. Later in his life the boy helps the four ghosts complete their tasks & which the four ghosts help him. The four ghosts where Tom Sizemore,Charles Grodin,Alfre Woodard, & Kyra Sedgwick it also starred Elisabeth Shue who was Robert Downey Jr.'s love intrest in the movie.
