Stephen King's "The Mist"?!

Question: I just saw the movie "The Mist" and I've heard the ending of the novel is different than the way the movie ended.

Quite frankly the movie ending bummed me out and I completely saw it coming when he counted bullets and had one less than there were people.

How did the novel end?

The story ends with Drayton writing everything down in a Howard Johnson's where they've stopped for the night. After leaving the store, he tried to go to his house, but he couldn't get there due to downed trees blocking the road. Consequently, he never finds out what happened to his wife.

As he finishes writing the story, he's worrying a little bit about how they're going to gas up his Rover in the mist and thinking that since he thought he heard someone say "Hartford" on the radio, that's where they'll go. And at that point he just says he'll leave the papers he's been writing on at the HoJo's and says they're going to drive on in the morning. We don't find out whether he ever gets out of the mist, whether anyone manages to get rid of it, or even anything definite about what caused it.

The whole movie is just about right on with the book up until the part after they get in the car and drive. In the book, it just kinda ends there..you don't really know what happens.
