D.A.R.Y.L., whose name is an acronym for "Data Analyzing Robot Youth Lifeform", is created by the government as an experiment in Artificial Intelligence. One of the original scientists decides to free Daryl, but dies in the process.
Daryl is then picked up by an orphanage and is placed temporarily with foster parents Mr. and Mrs. Richardson. Daryl does not remember who or what he is. As a normal adolescent boy, Daryl exhibits extraordinary talents after he goes to live with a foster family, Joyce and Andy Richardson. We also meet Howie and Ellen Fox, and their children Sherie and Turtle, the neighbours of the Richardsons. Daryl shows many incredible abilities, including an uncanny ability to play baseball, interact with ATM machines, and play videogames, much to the amazement of Turtle.
However, just as the Richardsons have begun to accept Daryl, their new-found happiness is shattered when the Government find him and return him to the facility where he was created. The D.A.R.Y.L. experiment has been considered to be a failure, and the decision is made that he be destroyed. But another scientist decides to free Daryl so that he can return to the only home he knows, that of the Richardson family. Another scientist who was posing as Daryl's biological mother earlier alerts the authorities, however. In the course of the escape, Daryl drives a car. The scientist is shot, and in his dying words, assured Daryl that he is a real person. Later, Daryl flies a SR-71 Blackbird. Having faked his own destruction when the plane is blown up in mid-flight by the U.S.A.F., Daryl finds his way back to the Richardsons. He did not survive when he ejected from the exploding plane and parachuted down into a lake. In the hospital, the scientist who was convinced that Daryl was merely a tool reveals herself. She repairs his electronic brain, restoring his life, and he is granted another chance to live with the Richardsons.

It's not AI. It was long before that. I remember it, probably from the '80's. It was called D.A.R.E.L. or D.A.R.R.E.L. or some variation. I can't find anything on the web about it, though. Maybe it was a TV movie?
