Can you tell me what you know about Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium?!

Question: I asked this question earlier but nobody answered.

The story of a magical toy shop sounds so familiar to me. Is this movie based on a book and/or is it a remake of an older movie?

Where have I seen a a magical toy store before?

I don't think that this movie is a remake. There is the old movie Babes in Toyland but the plots are nothing similar. There is an accompanying novelization by Suzanne Weyn released in Oct. of 2007. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mr._Magoriu...
Our local paper, The Detroit News, gives this movie three stars so I'm guessing that the movie critic thinks it's good but not great. Other sources haven't been so kind. They tend to give it only two or two and a half stars (or a C+) rating. According to IMDB, the plot is this: Molly Mahoney (Portman) is the awkward and insecure manager of Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium, the strangest, most fantastic, most wonderful toy store in the world. But when Mr. Magorium, the 243 year-old eccentric who owns the store (Hoffman), bequeaths the store to her, a dark and ominous change begins to take over the once remarkable Emporium.
It's rated G with nothing objectionable. 1 hour & 34 mins.running time.
P.S.--Maybe you are thinking of this movie The Christmas Toy (1986) (TV) at: http://www.imdb.com/Find?select=Plots&fo...

Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium is a 2007 film written and directed by Zach Helm. The film stars Natalie Portman, Dustin Hoffman, Jason Bateman and Zach Mills. The screenplay is the first that Zach Helm wrote when hired as a contract writer at 20th Century Fox, but it remained unfilmed until Helm was able to buy the script back after Stranger than Fiction was made.

Mr. Magorium's Wonder Emporium is a 2007 novelization of the film of the same name. The novelization was written by American fantasy author Suzanne Weyn. The novel, or "Magical Movie Novel", as it is named on its cover, was released on October 1, 2007. The film was written and directed by Zach Helm.

I saw the movie and it is wonderful. Dustin Hoffman has a similar lovability and weirdness that he portrayed in Rainman and Dick Tracy. Natalie Portman is so underrated as an actress. She's only begun to manifest what she can do, but this movie was a glimpse of that. If you like this kind of movies, you'd also like Enchanted, good story line and not too predictable as you would expect from a Disney movie. Yes, I tend to watch a lot of movies (3 last week).
