Nanny McPhee is a great movie -- it has it's very brief sad moments, but overall is light and ends very, very well.
SpaceJam is good too -- it's a mix of animation and live action. Michael Jordan and the classic Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, and others create a basketball team to play aliens. Bill Murray's in it too.
The Beethoven movies are good too although the first one is the best. It's about a family that adopts a St. Bernard dog -- and chaos breaks out.
The Santa Clause is also good and the timing is right for it.
The original Bad News Bears and The Parent Trap are classic kids movies that are funny as anything. Get the originals though -- the remakes weren't as good.
Rookie of the Year is also great. Because of an injury to his arm, a boy (I think about 13?) ends up being able to pitch at major league level -- it's really funny.
The Sand Lot is a great movie too. It's about a group of boys in a neighborhood who have a sandlot/neighborhood baseball team (they play each other) --- it's a wonderful movie. Funny, lighthearted, and ends great.
I wouldn't watch Bridge to Terabithia if you're looking for something funny and light because while it's an excellent movie, I wouldn't call it funny and light. It's ends up being kind of serious.
Liar, Liar and The Mask, both with Jim Carrey are good and they're funny.
If you want a current movie out in the theaters, Mr. Magorium and The Bee movie are both pretty good.
