The poem Beowulf gives no physical description of Grendel and his mother (or any of the other characters for that matter) but rather outlines them by their attributes. Both Grendel and mom are said to be descended from the line of Cain, outcast and evil. Grendel is a wanderer, large and strong as he's able to defeat groups of men and carry them back to his lair. In the film he's probably the worst realized character, a butt ugly giant with his jaw skewed to one side who has some a really, really bad skin problems. The few times he speaks are in Old English, making his dialog very hard to understand. He's a cartoon character, only scary when the tale jumps to him screaming, and not sympathetic at all, though the the film wishes him to be.
Much has been made in entertainment news of Angelina Jolie appearing nude in Beowulf as Grendels mother. Guess that's inticing if one gets off on a naked Barbie doll dripping gold paint. She also has a goofy prehensile hair braid and high heel spikes jutting from her feet. This is she-***** mother of Grendel? I don't think so. Early in the film, we catch glimpses of a claws and a distorted reflection in the water as Grendel's mother comforts her son - apparently she's some sort of shape-shifter. Would like to have seen more of her "demon" body. In the films version of the story both Hrothgar and Beowulf succumb to the mothers wiles, but why does Hrothgar's son (Grendel) turn out an ugly brute, while Beowulf's son is a bald, gold skinned guy who can take the form of a dragon?
