Question: Quentin has said that the object in the briefcase was simply a MacGuffin. It is nothing and has nothing important to do with the story. It was simply a lightbulb with a battery.
Other(actually very many) theories have been questioned. As the briefcase contains the soul of Marsellus Wallace. For many reasons this can be said since there is no answer. The band-aid on the back of his neck as in legend the devil removes your soul from the back of your neck. They were returning the briefcase to marsellus and that guy who came out of the bathroom shot at them and they weren't hurt. Divine intervention from God for saving a soul. Which also prompted Jules' Bible talk that were Brett's last words to hear.
Many other theories: like it was Tarantino's Golden Globe or Emmy in the case, it was some kind of radiation from another movie, it contained the diamonds that were lost in Reservoir Dogs since there was the connection of Vic Vega (Dogs) and Vincent Vega (Fiction).
But simply, there was nothing in there according to Tarantino, but since it was all nothing it is safe to believe whatever we thought was in there was true. :-)
