The church could hardly orchestrate the movement of the stars, now, could they? Of course it was real. Astronomers have known this for decades. The only real question is how such a 'star' could lead them to where Jesus was actually staying. Was it a flying saucer? No idea. But it would be interesting!
The story actually would date before any official church, back when Christians were still hiding from persecution. So, perhaps there really was some astronomical phenomenon.
There are several rational theories about it. Why is MAGIC so attractive to some people?
There was a planetary alignment near the inexact date of Christs birth. There are also short and long period comets. Either makes considerably more sense to me than ABRACADABRA does.
I enjoy an illusionist as much as anyone but I can assure you, I know those people don't disappear and tigers don't appear out of thin air.

The star was real enough to bring "wise men" from another country to the place where the Messiah would be born. That account is verified by the fact that their entourage was so extensive that it cause an uproar through out the entire city of Jerusalem and particularly upset King Herod when he heard that these people were seeking to know the location of the new born king of the Jews. He was so concerned that he had all of the male children butchered, two years old and under, just to make sure that his kingdom would not fall to another.
