I really can't take away the fact that he is a brilliant actor but I think a lot of women found it offensive after he openly criticized actress Brooke Shields for using the drug Paxil (paroxetine), an anti-depressant, to which Shields attributes her recovery from postpartum depression after the birth of her first daughter in 2003. Cruise asserted that there is no such thing as a chemical imbalance, and that psychiatry is a form of pseudoscience. This led to a heated argument with Matt Lauer on The Today Show on June 24, 2005. Brooke Shields responded to Cruise's comments by calling them "irresponsible and dangerous. Although he apologized and Brooke Shields accepted his apology, I think he should have also made a public apology to all women who suffered with postpartum depression who used medication to overcome it. I think it would have made a world of difference. I personally think that people took it a little overboard complaining about him jumping on Oprah's couch because if it was Jim Carey jumping on Oprah's couch, no one would have anything to say. That's Hollywood for you! The media builds a person up just to tear that person down!

a lot of people dont like the spiritual side of him being public about scientology would not help him

He spoke his mind. In this day and age of political correctness and liberals censoring everything they don't like, Tom has become an outcast because he didn't sit back and kiss ***.

I don't know why the public turns on stars. Tom or Britney or Lindsay or Paris, it doesn't matter. They are not in my world and as long as they don't kill or maim or harm, what difference does it make what they do in their personal lives. Like I said what they do makes no difference in my life so why should I be concerned.
I don't agree that Scientology is a real religion but if he wants to spend his money supporting the church and buying their theta testers, let him.

I kinda like Cruise , Liked him in some of his movies and some were crap (well , like all actors...lol)

I think that Tom overstepped the line when he argued that Brooke Sheilds did not need Antideppresants to handle Post partum depression...First off he lost sympathy with every mother who has had PPD and lost credit with alot of health care providers

he falls under the same category as people like Sting and Michael Stipe

If you can act or sing or write a song.....good show, keep up the good work , but don't try and be and expert where you are not

I personally don't like him because I think he's a poor actor. Also, every interview I've seen with him has shown him acting pompous and as though he were something great. That puts me off.

I really couldn't care less what someone believes in terms of religion (believing the dogma of Scientology makes as much sense as believing the dogma of Christianity does, to me). When he started acting like a nutty person (jumping up and down on Oprah's couch, going on about how he knows more about psychology and psychiatric medicine than anyone else, saying that anyone with PPD can get over it only with what he believes) was when the whole backlash really started.

Tom Cruise was once heralded as a very suave, posh, intelligent. extremely good looking actor who marched to the tune of what people saw in themselves, or wished they saw in themselves. Since then he has since turned into a geek, by trying to look and act younger than he is, and by taking on strange philosophy's that seem to fly in the face of both the public, and logic. He seems to try too hard now. And he seems phony, and probably is.

He forgot he's an ACTOR and forgot that just because he's an actor and has lots of money, it doesn't mean he knows everything or what's best for anyone but himself and his family.

he is honest and he speaks his mind and express whatever it is in his heart. Sometimes his ideas and thinking clashes with mainstream thinking. People are judgemental. Other than that I can't think of anything else. He adopted several children which is a great thing.

Put real simply, he started taking himself way too seriously, and worse, expected everyone else to as well.
p.s. I agree he's an underrated actor, and I like the majority of his films.

That big fake smile always plastered on his face...the fake marriage...the Oprah appearance...it's too much.

If you can't see thru that marriage your blind and gullible.

You are correct; Tom Cruise is a great actor and humanitarian. However, there are people who seem to be put off by his smug and "holier than thou" attitude.

The holier than thou comes in to play with respect to Scientology. Then, as you correctly reference, the Katie Holmes, jumping on a couch, Oprah interview that seemed to set his public image a-swirl in the toilet.

People have a right to their opinion and can like and dislike as they see fit. Unfortunately, in America there just doesn't have to be a rhyme or reason to it.

He tends to be extremely judgmental. Just because you are of a particular religion doesn't mean you can ridicule others for their choice of religion. He just cant seem to keep his mouth shut and stop judging others.

I don't hate him or anything but he gets abused by People Magazine all the time. The Public just needs to get over his religious views, someones religion shouldn't have anything to do with them making movies and your view on the movie. People today just have nothing else to do but real about Actors and Actresses and make fun of them.
