There are very few movies that match the book. A lot has to do with length of story. The screen writer and author should collaborate a lot better. This is just another to the list.

They turned it into a Will Smith "Oh no, you didn't shoot that green stuff at me!" action vehicle.
I remember reading the book and the movie doesn't look anything like it. I think they just "upped the graphics" to make it more of a Hollywood flick.
Yes, I know... It's called a screenplay!!! They often change many details about books/short stories/epics to get them to what they think of as "more appealing" to the audience. Often the screenplay is almost unrecognizable from the original work.
I thought I Am Legend was a remake of the 40's B&W horror flick, Last Man On Earth. The plot is the same. It's possible that they "Borrowed" the name I Am Legend for this movie, or it happened to match your story.

They had to modernize the story both in content and overall presentation so it can compete with movies of today. The basics still seem to be there. And of course the dog is throughout apparently...that makes people happier then the temp one in the book. My big question is whether the ending will be the same as the book. For the book, the title is key...will that be the same for the movie?
This is what Hollywood does. They take an excellent book that a lot of people love and then change it around, throw some naked girls in and call it a day. I am mostly curious to see how the ending has changed. The other versions of this book (including Omega Man and others) at least had similar endings to the book....

i know! "The Last Man On Earth",with Vincent Price was wonderfully cheesy and chilling and one of his best performances.even"The Omega Man" with Charlton Heston had its moments.the only thing that looks right is the TITLE,which is the right one for the original Richard Matheson novel.

The movie is 'based on' the story, not the story itself. Several movies have been 'based on' this story, the most famous being 'Omega Man' with Charlton Heston. My husband and I got the recent book with 'I Am Legend' in it, and I've just re-read the story, which was good ... this movie is an 'updated version' of the story, and I think it needs to be appreciated for what it is ... a story that is 'based on' a story, and not taken from the story itself. I hope this 'end of the world' type movie, with zombies or vampires or whatever NEVER die out, because they do say a lot about the times in which they are made, and should 'stand alone' rather than 'comparing them' to the stories they are based on. Similarly, the stories also deserve to be 'stand alone' for their take on 'society' and the 'after death beings' of our nightmares.
"Based" on a story. Sometimes movies are "loosely based on a story", and sometimes "very loosely based on a story".
Well they ruined it from the start by casting Will Smith!!! NO WAY...he should have gotten the part!!
