Whats the greatest war film ever made?!

Question: Well for the UK, it has to be : Battle of Britain/Guns of Navarone
For the USA : Saving Private Ryan/Sands of Iwo Jima

But in my opinion the best War classic was "Band of Brothers" this show was truly wonderful as it showed the survivors at the beginning of every show, it really was beautifully done!

In my opinion it is without a doubt, hands down Saving Private Ryan and the second best one is Platoon.

I don't know but whatever it was you can bet America won it single handedly.

Platoon, Full Metal Jacket, We Were Soldiers, in that order.

dunno if it's the 'greatest', but i like "pearl harbor".

full metal jacket

Tears of the Sun

the hunt for red october

I adore 'pearl harbor' and 'the longest day'( just great the latter)

Definitely Saving Private Ryan because it shows a realistic picture of the horrors of war, its just a stunning film.

Longest Day or Ryan, hard choice.

Full Metal Jacket, Pearl Harbor, Saving Private Ryan, and Waterboys with Pauly Shore. Had to add that one! HA

Shaving Ryan's Privates... no !! That's not right is it ? !!!

Erm.... either Private Ryan, or Platoon....

Saving Private Ryan, Flags of Our Fathers...

i know its not a typical war film but 300 was brilliant, as was hunt for red October.

Its not strictly a film but, "Band of Brothers" was amazing.
That's the one that i remember the most as being really gripping.

Battleground or Patton

maybe you wouldn't class this as a war film: Seven Samurai (the original)

From the last 20 years, I think it has to be either Saving Private Ryan or Platoon. But in my opinion, the greatest war film ever is All Quiet On the Western Front. Great story & excellent visual devices. Just a haunting film about the horrors of war.

The Great Escape without a doubt.

the great escape
the dirty dozen

heartbreak ridge
apocolypse now

It's more of a biographical film than a war film, but I think that "Downfall" should not be ignored.

Both the British and the Americans make films which suggest that they heroically won WWII on their own, and they are both wrong. "Downfall" reminds us that the country which did the most to defeat the Nazis, and which finished them off, was the Soviet Union (how quickly we forget). Of course, the biggest cause of their defeat, was Hitler's arrogance and megalomania; no film shows us this more clearly than "Downfall". Bruno Ganz's performance as the fuhrer is chilling...

Darth Maul, of course the USSR would not have defeated Nazi Germany on its own, I just think that film makers on both sides of the Atlantic overlook the fact that Eastern Front was where the bulk of the war in Europe was fought.

saving private ryan..
or maybe the deer hunter

Apocalypse Now is by far the Greatest!

Dennis Hopper hopped up on Crack what a great film.

Good Will hunting and Full metal Jacket

My personal favorite is Patton. The most historically accurate is Tora! Tora! Tora!

My Picks
1 Glory
2 Bridge On The River Kwai
3 Gettysburg
4 A Bridge Too Far
5 Saving Private Ryan
6 We Were Soldiers
7 Black Hawk Down
8 Hamburger Hill
9 Das Boot
10 Pearl Harbor

Gladys
Without the pressure exerted by The US & UK on Nazi Germany. They would have easily defeated Russia and won WW2

Braveheart was amazing saving private Ryan is good also Apocolypse now love it top ten in my mind also We were soldiers amazing

Hi there.
Apocalypse Now, the original cinema release, not the lousy Redux version.
Cheers, Steve.

Full Metal Jacket
Courage Under Fire

The Longest Day Great Escape A Bridge To Far
