What is this monster in the movie "the Mist"?!
Question: In the previews for the movie "The Mist", it seems there is a monster in the mist. Can anybody who's read the book tell me what it is? I'm predicting some kind of aliens or some big reptiles or something.

There's several monsters. An accident at a military installment causes a dimensional break and all these monsters cross over - some really gross out bugs, the tentacly thing, a creature w/elephantine legs, and so on.
A huge chicken....freakin huge......It takes the people and eats them.
I read the story and I don't recall them ever saying what it was or that anyone actually SAW it. I just remember it had tentacles. The ending was sad. I hope they keep it the same way for the movie.
Edit to add: I do vaguely remember something mentioned in the story about how the town was near some kind of army base that may have been doing experiments. Now I'll have to re-read it!
