Star Wars question - can you help?!

Question: Believe it or not, I've only just seen episode 3, and I didn't realise that (spoiler.......

.....Padme actually died in childbirth; I always thought (from only seeing 4,5 and 6) that she died when Leia was very young. What's confusing me is that in Return of the Jedi, Luke asks Leia if she can remember her mother at all, and she says "a little....just that she was very beautiful" (or words to that effect. But if Padme died in childbirth, Leia couldn't have remembered her. Is this an inconsistency in the writing, or was Leia referring to her adoptive mother?

Anyone know?

She did have an adoptive mum. Bail Organa Had a wife (you see her at the end on Ep 3: Breha Antilles Organa).

I don't know whether Leia was referring to her real mum or adoptive mum, to be honest, It could be seen as an inconsistency, but it may not be.

George Lucas knows, but he's not telling!

Speculation: "Queen Breha also served as the Minister of Education and it is almost certain that she died in the destruction of Alderaan. based on Leia's own recollections of "mother" some years later. Conversely, there is some evidence to suggest she may have died when Leia was a child, as Leia spoke of being raised by Bail Organa's three sisters "

It is set a long time ago in a galaxy far away......
Anything can happen

i reckon its just an inconsistency in the writing she didnt have an adoptive mother did she i thought she just had an adoptive dad?

I'd say it was definitely inconsistency on the part of the writers. Funny, I'd never noticed it 'til you just asked this question!

She didn't have an adoptive mother... it's just an inconsistency...

I think it's pretty obvious that Lucas HAD NOT planned to do prequels... that was just after the big income... so...

it was an error...

It is open to interpretation, perhaps Leia had a picture of her mother as a young child only to lose it when still young. Maybe having such a strong connection with the force she was able to form memories earlier than most babies. Who knows?

think it's her actual mother, one other thing that puzzles me if obi wan is in his thirties when he returns to tattoine with luke skywalker, why is obi wan seventy when luke meets him again.luke being only 19.

Haha my dad said the same thing. i think its just an inconsistency. i dont think she had an adoptive mother.

Leia was brought up not by her father, but by royal servants and will have had access to her history and who her mother was.

Luke on the other hand, was told nothing of who his parents were - so therefore was totally oblivious as to his parentage.

And you have to allow for poetic licence, don't you?

Ok coming from a real Star Wars nerd this is how it is explained. First Leia did have an adopted mother she was the Queen of Alderan and she knew she was adoptid that is why Luke asked ".....your real Mother". But as far as her 'memory" of her real mother it was explained as dreams or a force vision. So it is really something she made up as a little girl. Think of it like when someone tells you something happens and you don’t remember but you conger up the images in your head. But like I said she had Force dreams and without realizing what they were at the time she almost made up her memory of her mother but what she saw was real.

Good question and remember that George Lucas has a great deal of inconsistencies in Star Wars. Actually, Leia could have remembered her mother since Leia had the force running through her veins even in the womb. She could have sensed that her mother was sad. Remember we are dealing with the force and not mere mortals. I think in Episode III Padme touches Leia for one brief second once she gives birth so this could explain the beautiful comment..however it doesnt explain why Luke doesn't remember. except maybe Leia formed a Force bond more so with Padme than Luke did since Leia and Padme have more in common.

She definitely is not talking about her adoptive mother. Leia was aware that she was adopted. If you read the original novels it states that she knew.

Yes Leia couldn't have known her mother at all since she died in childbirth. Only from Photos I guess. Good spot. I actually watched it last night.

to put it simply, leia "felt" padme in the force,as young as she was.i could go right into one but i wont bore everyone. :-)

Never spotted that one before. Nice one.

Possibly...or either George Lucas didn't know he was going to make more.

Does it matter?
It's just an inconsistency. Star wars is NOT a history book.....

Greetings Exulted one, I am Luke Skywalker, Jedi Knight and friend of Captain Solo. Leia was referring to Padme. When one is Force talented, meaning one who can use The Force, sometimes one can remember things from an extremely young age. In Leia's case, when she remembered seeing her mother, Padme, for the first and last time when she was very young, very young meaning when she was born.
