Is it a good idea to be a movie director?!

Question: i heard movie directors have to spend most of there own money or get into debt to make a movie and when the movie makes it big you spend half of the earned money to repaying debts.
personally i don't have the money or the time to invest into going that way. so i wouldn't take a gamble on it.
i'd rather become an author. so i can get recognised as a good story teller and ideas person. that way someone else can invest time and money into turning it into a movie. (and all i would need is a typewriter/computer and paper.) ;o)
