Anyone hear about the big Golden Compass controversy?!

Question: I heard recently that the new Golden Compass movie was stirring up some kind of problem in the religious community. Any more information? thanks.

I highly recommend that people do boycott this movie - I don't think any movie or media of this kind should be supported, nor tolerated. I'm disgusted at the author, but I feel deep sympathy for him that he has not been blessed with saving faith, I'll pray for him. I do not understand why anyone should watch the movie or read the books -both should be banned, in my opinion. Yes, it is a matter of the strength of your faith on whether you fall away from God or not, but I believe that this movie/series can give you too much of a push over the edge. I will stand firm in what I have said and again encourage you not to support the Golden Compass and its views.
Thank You

The movie is purported to support an atheist veiwpoint and so some religious groups are urging a boycott. I think they are concerned because it is targetted to a young audience but in general, I find religious boycotts to be very stupid and only encourage me to watch the movie even more.

My local newspaper, The Detroit News, gave it a decent pre-review with no implication that it was all that "sinister". I have always liked movies with Nicole Kidman (with the exception of "Bewitched) so I'll probably see it. I quote: "The first volume of Philip Pullman's fantasy-trilogy "His Dark Materials" is set in an alternate world where every character has his own "daemon"--an animal representation of his or her deepest feelings and true desires. Dakota Blue Richards is Lyra, the young Oxford student who overhears a conversation between her professor uncle (Daniel Craig) and other scholars about a mysterious substance they call "dust". This triggers a fantastic adventure. The journey of discovery for Lyra involves a mysterious benefactor (Nicole Kidman), a supernatural organization known as Gobbler's, and a struggle for Lyra's soul." Opens December 7th.

The source material for the Golden Compass (stupid American title, why can't they just use the proper name for it 'The Northern Lights') is highly anti-religious. The bad guys of the His Dark Materials trilogy are the 'Magisterium', which is a highly corrupt and controlling version of the Catholic Church. A Catholic group in America is calling for the movie to be banned because, even though the anti-Christian sentiments in the film have been watered down and applied to all religions, they fear it may inspire children to read Philip Pullman's trilogy and turn away from the Church. Besides, organised religion very rarely likes any kind of fantasy film, anti-religion or not. Even Narnia, which is almost the complete opposite of His Dark Materials theologically, was criticised by the church.

Yeah.

Supposedly, it teaches children to be athiests. The author was an athiest, and there are some themes and stuff that do point in that direction.

Sounds idiotic to me. The people who are upset about all this are people in the religious community (I'm a Christian, as well), but the way I see it, if anyone's faith is so badly shaken by a MOVIE, the movie isn't the problem.

The books are sort of anti-Church and anti-God. The first one doesn't really discuss it that much, so the movie shouldn't deal with it; but in the third book, The Amber Spyglass, author Philip Pullman really gets into how he believes that the Church is what's destroying the world. It's kind of interesting.

Yes, they're already spreading this message in my parent's congregation:

"I've heard about this offensive movie and gladly put the word out to NOT see it and definitely NOT ALLOW YOUR CHILDREN SEE IT or read the books. Be careful little eyes what you see!

I am actually passing this one along, because it is true. Check out www.snopes.com/politics/religion/compass... and read it for yourself. Hope you all pass this along.

A terrible, (anti-Christian) movie called the 'Golden Compass' will be coming out in early December, aimed at children and labeled as a family movie. This movie is based on a series of books by an atheist British author (Phillip Pullman) whose goal in writing the books is to be the 'Anti-Narnia' series and to lead children into atheism.

The main villains in the series of books are the Magisterium, Cardinals, and the Pope, and includes a heroine that is a young girl who sets out to kill God. The truly sick thing about the movie is that they have made it APPEAR as if it is an innocent film, with exciting effects and a fairytale story. They have removed from the movie the appalling anti-Catholic/Christian themes from the book. The goal of the movie is to hook unsuspecting families into viewing the film so that children will then want to read the books (and probably buy merchandise). Nicole Kidman stars in it, and Scholastic Books is behind it.

The goal is to let as many people as possible know about this horrible film and to have it bomb at the box office. The makers of the movie are hoping it will be as big as Harry Potter or the DaVinci Code. Let's pray that it won't! Please tell as many people as possible to avoid this terrible film."

I read the first book in the series and since I'm an ardent atheist I enjoyed the digs at the church, especially since I've written medieval fantasy my whole life and do exactly the same thing in my stories.

Of course they can say what they want, but if what they say makes no sense, which this doesn't, since mysticism is immoral while atheism is just thinking clearly, then we all have a duty to stand up and tell them exactly why they're wrong and to stop threatening people or else it's time for self-defense.

Oh, there's nothing about "killing god" in the first book. I haven't read the last two but I hear they're awful and nonsensical and have nothing to do with the first book. In the first book a couple mentions are made of the unpleasant dominion of the church over people and something about the foolishness of believing in gods toward the end. Mostly it's about a little girl escaping her mother who wants to kill her and finding her father who she imagines is a hero, and polar bears that are sentient and wear armor and everyone is born with a magical pet they share a deep connection with.

Yes, the Christian right-wing folks have their knickers in a twist because the book was written by an atheist and the story (book, at least) involves killing God. Or a god. Anyway, I think the controversy will bring the film more attention than it would have gotten otherwise.

DONT SEE IT. that all i have to say.

It's very anti-religious because someone is trying to kill "god".By:You-Know-Who.

The books do walk a fine line when it comes to the whole religion thing. I've just finished the whole trilogy because I was curious about those same rumor and wanted to decide for myself. I am not a religious person so the risk of being offended for me was a non issue. The children do not set out to kill the actual GOD, they are after an imposter pretending to be GOD who is making their world/s very problematic for some very malevolent reasons. A lot of people have also said the books are supposed to be anti christian, sort of the ante thesis of Chronicles of Narnia, this is not so, they warn against churches taking too much liberty with DOGMA.
DOGMA are laws that churches make on god's behalf on earth. Taking too much liberty with them leads to things like The Inquisition, The Crusades, The Witch Trials. Basically doing things to per serve their self interest. It's actually pretty precocious stuff for a kids novel. But if it puts your mind at ease the movie companies have opted to remove almost all the theological qualms people are having with the books from the movie. They want a big draw for their Christmas release and they know what is preceived to be an anti religious movie wouldn't set to well with concerned parents.
Most people giving their opinion haven't actually bothered to read the books and really only have the fact that the author is an admitted athiest to support their concerns. If you like you can type in either the authors name or the title of the book into wikipedia.com and it will give all the info you want.
