"Into The Wild" what happens in the end - does he live or die ?!

Question: Have just sat through almost all this film, even though they warned us before we went in that there was no heating (that's the Holloway Odeon in North London in case you were thinking of going)

Anyway, we're going to Fairbanks, Alaska in June, so we wanted to see it and cuddled up in the freezing cold for about two hours, watching this film. And (I guess) about 5 minutes before the end - BLANK SCREEN !!

We got our money back, and a free ticket for our next visit, but I cannot sit through that whole two hours again. Beloved says he dies in the end, but I think he was going to survive - can anyone tell me which of us is right ?

He passes away.

The 3rd person who answered this question is incorrect. After the movie ended it said that two weeks after his death some hunters had found his body.

Poor guy mistook wild potato root (edible) for wild sweetpea root (toxic/inedible), starves to death as a result of the toxins. The End.

He dies. They didn't find his body for several months. I watched the interview with Sean Penn on Oprah. I mean I guess he lived the way he wanted to and witnessed wonderful things. But I can't help but wonder if he thought it was worth it when the real pain of hunger & physical pain became so intense. Then being alone while enduring it.

I'm sure the family allowed it to be glamorized to deal with their own grief easier. I had no desire to see the end. If I had seen only the wonder of it all I might have gone to see it. There's enough pain in the world w/o viewing another's.
