What is the order of the Star Wars movies?!

Question: I want to watch the Star Wars movies, because I have Battlefront 2 (for the PS2) and Battlefront 1 (for the PS2) and I have no idea what's going on. Some people are saying the order is I, II, III, IV, V, VI, but, I have some doubts. I have doubts because movie III was made in 2005, and I think IV was made long before that, and not only those 2 movies. Please help me!

The chronological order is I, II, III, IV, V, VI
The order in which they were made was IV, V, VI, I, II, III
IV, V, VI were made first because the technology for I, II, III didn't exist in the 1970s. For their time IV, V, VI were state of the art.

Side note:
There are Three moves that predate I, II, III and three moves that post date IV, V, VI
Lucus has shown interest in doing the predate moves but not the post date moves.

in story terms,
Phantom menace
attack of the clones
Revenge of the sith
A new hope
Empire strikes back
return of the jedi

The order is I, II, III, IV, V, VI. its just weird becaus they made the last 3 first and then the first 3 later. dont ask me why:)

Well, the order they were released is episode 4,5 and 6 then like 20 years later he made episode 1, 2 then 3.

4,5,6
then
1,2,3

Just look out for the R2-D2 character
as it develops in that order.

the first three starwars movies made were IV"starwars", V"the empire strikes back" andVI :return of the jedi", from 1977 onwards, but george lucas, (creator) wanted to tell the full story of Anakin Skywalkers fall into the darkside to become Darth vader, so in the last ten years he producer episodes I ,II, and III. and this is only the tip of the galctic iceburg, for more on starwars, and a great place to explore the galaxy, visit Jedisanctuary.org if you like star wars, youll like this site!

IV, V, and VI were shot first, but it you want to watch it in chronological order then I, II, and II should be watched first. Personally, I prefer the original trilogy which is IV, V, VI...,regardless there are some plot holes that are obvious enough for a first timer to realize that Lucas messed up a little bit. Overall, IV, V, VI are the best and Episode I is total crap.

What you are supposing is correct. The storyline of the star wars battlefront 2 game go according to the movies since it was released after the third movie came out. However battlefront 1 game go according to the movies 1,2,4,5,6 because episode 3 wasnt released at the time.

456 was made first, then 123, i was told it was because the tecnology wasnt that great. but in order i always watch 123456 instead of the other way around but many people before the new ones come out only had 456, but before each film starts theres a recap so you know whats been happening before. i not long watch it for the first time and thought it was amazing.

it's really supposed to go like: 4,5,6,1,2,3, but i watch them: 1,2,3,4,5,6, it's much easier, you should do that

If you watch them in numerical order, you get to see the rise and fall of Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader. This isn't the case if you watch them in the order they were released.

Ah ... so much misguided information ... so little time to correct it.

First: the best way to start a fight between Star Wars nerds is to talk about the video games. The games are loosely based on the movies but by their very nature are not really a part of the movie canon because once you start to play the game YOU are in control of what happens. When you are in control of the story it is no longer the story by Lucas and that makes it non-canon. I have been in monumental debates about this and in the end it always comes down to agreeing to disagree. That being said, I'm not into the gaming aspect of Star Wars so this is just my opinion on it ... I'm sure you will find others that will tell you I'm insane ( that may be true of course but I'm not telling ... lol ...)

Second: the order of release for the movies ...

A New Hope - 1977 (although it was out in 76 but was pulled almost immediately because of problems)

The Empire Strikes Back - 1980
Return Of The Jedi - 1983

The Phantom Menace - 1999
Attack Of The Clones - 2002
Revenge Of The Sith - 2005

Some of the other answers here say that it was done that way because the technology to do a lot of the special effects wasn't around in 77. This is not true ... the truth is that NONE of the technology to do these movies was around then ... Lucas and his team had to come up with the ways to do things ... that is the Ultimate "gift" that Star Wars gave to all of us ... new ways of doing things that at the time were thought to be impossible ... many have called Lucas a "genius" ... well he's only a genius because he was smart enough to surround himself with the brightest minds in the movie industry. You've all probably heard of "Dream Works" ... guess where they came from ... yep, Lucas ... they were part of the original "Dream Team" of techs that Lucas had working for him. Somewhere along the line they wanted to strike out on their own ... instead of being a "jerk", for lack of a better word, Lucas, in effect, said OK ... tell you what why don't we sit down, talks some numbers and instead of you guys having to go out and start from scratch you can take the whole division of LucasFilm with you and take it in the direction you want to go with it. In many ways Lucas IS a jerk but this move showed that he does have a nice & practical side to him. In many ways it was the "reward" he gave that team for all that they did to bring Star Wars to the big screen. I'm sure there was a itty, bitty, tiny part of the sale that said in effect ... ok guys, I'll give you a good deal here but ... if you come up with something new give me first crack at it.

TBRMInsanity gives a "side note" in his answer ... he is also WRONG. When Lucas first had the idea of Star Wars he saw it as a 12 part story done in the way the old Flash Gordon serials were done. When he set out to start writing the story outline he realized that 12 episodes would be too much and cut it down to 9 three part trilogys. Ep 1 - 3 were to be about the rise and fall of Anakin Skywalker ... Ep 4 - 6 were to be about the rise of Luke Skywalker and the redemption of Anakin Skywalker ... Ep 7 - 9 were to be about the "Other Skywalker" that Yoda spoke of in TESB. This worked for him until he was trying to flesh out the final duel between Luke and Vader on the second Death Star. At this point Leia was NOT the other Skywalker. Lucas was stumped on how to get Luke to attack his father in a dark side fueled rage. He realized the best way to do that was to have Vader threaten someone or something that Luke held dear. That is when Leia became his twin sister. Having Vader threaten Leia was the perfect way to get Luke to fly of the handle like he did. Making this change did two things: 1) It made some fans go EEWWWW when they thought of the kissing scenes between Luke and Leia ... 2) It effectively eliminated the story line for Ep 7 - 9. In the end Lucas took about 85% of the things he planned to do in Ep 7 - 9 and used it to make ROTJ the great movie it was ... lots of info, great effects, and a heartbreaking lesson about how love can destroy a person just as quickly and effectively as hate.

As for why he did Ep 4 first ... well the reason are many but the main reason is because that movie could have been a "stand alone" movie. By that I mean it could have been seen as a whole story in and of itself. He did it that way because if it was a flop, like everybody told him it would be, then nobody would ever know there was supposed to be more to the story. This movie was done on a half a shoe string budget and actually came within a couple of missed phone calls of never being finished. Lucas had a "inside man" on the board at Fox and when the decision was made to forget about Star Wars he got a hold of Lucas right away and told him not to answer his phone for a couple of weeks until he could change the boards mind. In the DVD set of the Original Trilogy ( 4 - 6 ) there is a bonus disk that has a documentary called "Empire of Dreams" ... it is a telling story of how close we came to never knowing about a galaxy far, far, away. That disk is full of interesting little tidbits about the movies and how they were made.

So, in a nutshell; you could say that in the beginning what TBRMIsanity says about the "other trilogys" before and after what we now have is almost true except for the fact that Lucas dropped the number of episodes to 9 and Ep 7 - 9 were eliminated to make ROTJ a better movie.

To Sith Lord6:

I agree that Ep 1 was a disappointment to many fans myself included but the duel at the end between Oui-Gon, Obi-Wan and Darth Maul made up for the rest of it ... what an incredible fight that was. I disagree, however, with your statement that there are plot holes that should be obvious enough for first timers to pick out. No doubt there are a few plot holes but I just don't think a newbie would be able to see them on the first watch.

To Todd M:

I too own and operate a Fan based Star Wars site and I will give the one you mention a look but to be honest with you ... anybody who gives the name of Ep 4 to be Star Wars doesn't fill me with too much desire to check it out. The name of Ep 4 was A New Hope. Yes, it was only added after it was a hit and Lucas knew he would be making more movies but that is also another part of "being safe" with Ep 4. It first came out titled Star Wars ... if it flopped nobody would be the wiser. After about a month of it breaking every box office record to be found Lucas put the "A New Hope" title in.

I really hope I'm not coming across as a arrogant jerk because that is not what I'm trying to do. It just ticks me off to see people give answers that are not quite right.
