because he was on the uss indianapolis in ww2 when it was hit by a torpedo and sank and was in the water for 5 days with a swarm of maneating sharks.

his experience with them in WWII

So then it's not just cause they have sharp teeth?

When the Indianapolis sank, after being torpedoed, 1100 men went in the water, 400 came out. Sharks took the rest

He was on the USS Indianapolis to deliver the A Bomb which was attacked by a Japanese submarine. Many casualties due to shark attacks. He remembered their eyes like "black doll eyes, rolling over." Great film.

One had the bad taste once, to chew off his leg. And the fellow held a grudge. Understandible.

It wasn't that he didn't like them, it was that he was 'obsessed' with them.

Both the characters played by Robert Shaw and Richard Dreyfous had a 'shark experience' which led them to a shark obsession/career.

Wasn't his character like the Moby Dick Captain? I wonder why he would seek to kill something he didn't like.
