Because she dared to take on such a wide range of scripts, we get to see the full spectrum of her immense talent.
I liked her best when she played her trump card of being pushy or imperious.
She is feisty with resentment telling off Cary Grant in The Philadelphia Story (1940), and Humphrey Bogart has his hands full with proud, righteous Rose Sayer's pouring all the gin out in The African Queen (1951).
Surely the subject matter of a chemically dependent household is a disturbing, depressing Bummer with a capital B, but she is great as the imperious, self-justified drama queen, Mary Tyrone, in O'Neil's Long Day's Journey Into Night (1962). She is all over the place, realistically out of control trying to be in control, lurching to the other side of the spectrum in needy vulnerability.
i think she's hilarious in "bringing up baby".
She is great in A Lion in Winter.
Id have to say Lion in Winter. I don't think any actress ever put an acid tongue to such a glorious use as she did, matched up against Peter O'Toole (who was every bit her equal).
