according to Lucas,

when Vader throws the emporer off the edge of the pit, some of the electricity that was hiting him damaged his breather. without that he had no way to keep breathing. he was dead man long before Luke removed the helmet.

Proof: Listen to Vader before he picks up the emporer and after.

his breathing is barely coming out.

I always thought that the electric 'storm' from when he grabbed the emperor short circuited his biological suit. Who knows how that thing helped him breath or how it pumped his blood.

George Lucas did not do a very good job at all in writing these stories after Star Wars and the Empire Strikes Back. There are a ton of questions he fails to answer and he leaves alot of holes in the plot. Shame, after Empire it seemed like this was going to be the greatest sci-fi/fantasy story in history. Sucks it didn't live up to its early promise.

He took quite a jolt from the emperor to protect Luke...that did for him.

The emperor electricuted him a little bit when darth chucked him over the railing.

My husband says it's because he was living on the energy of the dark side which was powering his suit, when he changed to the good side he lost his power and couldn't live.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

short circuit bionic overload.

He is kept alive by machinery. When he chucks the emperor into the pit, his machinery is damaged and he slowly dies as everything shuts down

he got a killer zap from the emperor just before the emperor dies he tells like that luke is gonna die so i guess he must just up the amps from his transformer and darth gets it instead , i just watched it and was thinking the same thing im afraid the deflector sheilds will be quite operational

I also thought that it was because of the force lightning that he came in contact with when he saved Luke. It couldn't have been good for his internal circuits and such.

Well, first off, Luke beat him so bad during their duel. Then he got a pretty good dose of the Emperor's lightning. Plus he was kind of fragile to begin with.

i assumed it was because he grabbed the lightning dude

At that point, Darth Vader was more machinery than man. The electrical shocks that he received from the Emperor destroyed the workings of his machinery, causing all life support systems, and mechanical functions to fail. Luke took his helmet off because he wanted to see his son Luke just one time with his own eyes before he died.

As I understand it, the suit Vader wore was as much a self-contained, life-support aparatus, as it was an amplifier for the energies of the Dark Side. THere are several references made in all 3 original movies, as well as what you see at the end of the "new" trilogy, to show thet Vader was a Cyborg (cybernetic organism. 1/2 man, 1/2 machine/computer) Since it received considerable damage during his fight with Luke, AND the massive "jolt" when he betrayed and destroyed the Emporor, It would have malfunctioned and begun shutting down, as evidenced by the sparking, the visible components where "covers" had been cracked and the change in the "breathing sound" generated by the suit at the end. Since his body was in no condition to function on it's own, the loss of his life support killed someone who should have died years before.

The Emperor zapped him what for! Nothing more exciting I'm afraid!
