National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation

I enjoy Christmas movies, but not in November like some networks are starting already.

Oooooh. Oooooh. I know this one!!!

My wife and I love Christmas movies!

It's A Wonderful Life
Scrooge w/ Alistair Sims
Christmas in Connecticut w/Bing Crosby
Mr. Magoo's Christmas
The Grinch That Stole Christmas
Scrooged w/Bill Murray
Christmas Vacation w/Chevy Chase
The Santa Clause w/Tim Allen
Miracle on 42nd Street w/Natalie Woods

Those are some. It's late. I cant think of them all.

1) A Christmas Story~"You'll shoot your eye out!"
2) Scrooge! (musical)~Albert Finney as Scrooge, with many wonderful songs and musical numbers~~"December the 25th, me dear, December the 25th! The dearest day of all the year~December the 25th!"
3) Miracle on 34th Street (1947)~Edmund Gwenn, Maureen O'Hara, John Payne and Natalie Wood
4) Christmas in Connecticut (original)~Barbara Stanwyck, Dennis Morgan, S.Z. Sakall and Sydney Greenstreet
5) Scrooge (1951)~If Alastair Sim is to be remembered for just one film, I think people would select this one. There are many versions of "A Christmas Carol", but I think Sim singlehandedly draws people back to this movie.
6) The Nightmare Before Christmas~As has been commented many times before, Tim Burton's film is a brilliant bit of marketing because it's equally viewable for Halloween or Christmas. This enchantingly eerie and quirky masterpiece of animation is a delight for the senses~eyes, ears AND mouth if you have the urge to sing along with the memorable songs. (Now, that was an odd sentence I admit.)
7) The Lion in Winter~In this story set in the 12th century, Peter O'Toole, Katharine Hepburn, Anthony Hopkins, Timothy Dalton and the rest of the remarkable cast bring to wry, witty and often-vicious life the family of King Henry of England and wife Eleanor of Aquitaine, plus a couple of troubling guests. Eleanor has been freed from prison for the holidays. Henry's hope is to choose who will be the next to reign, so their three sons continually vie for selection. Now, THAT is a memorable Christmas movie!
8) Die Hard~And now for a completely different type of Yuletide story... Sometimes people forget that it's a Christmas party that the pseudo-terrorists interrupt, which is why the decorations for the dead guy are at hand. The cast is AMAZING, and it seems more like the Fourth of July than Xmas, with all of the pyrotechnics.
9) Desk Set~Katharine Hepburn, Spencer Tracy, Joan Blondell, Gig Young and a computer named EMERAC are among the gifts this film offers. While I was wracking my brain for Christmas scenes, I suddenly remembered the office party and decided that this has to go on the list. I mean, everyone will be listing some of the same films, so I'm trying to go for a few that might not be. I love this witty comedy and have watched it many times. As a lover of research, I can think of the ladies' work as being a dream job!
10) It's a Wonderful Life~OK. I'll cave in and put another expected film on my list because I don't like most of the other possibilities, not enough to say I would tune in to watch some of them. Unless I can think of a different film, this is #10.

HONORABLE MENTION:
Legend~As the unicorn's horn is shorn, wintertime descends on the forest. In this wintry setting, an age-old battle is waged between good and evil. This mythic battle reflects some of the beliefs from the ancient observances that precede Christmas. It's a film with some flaws, but overall, it's a superb fantasy experience with a cast that includes Tom Cruise, Mia Sara, Tim Curry, Billy Barty, and a wonderful supporting cast. In this Ridley Scott film, many of the scenes are stunningly beautiful, which certainly should be no surprise.

DISHONORABLE MENTION:
Gremlins~This is a Christmas movie that was released in July, weirdly enough. I remember sitting in an airconditioned theater wishing I could walk out into snowy streets. (I hate summer!) There are a lot of inconsistencies in this movie, such as why a cranky old lady who hates Christmas sets out an expensive snowman; but, it does have some good scenes. Of course, it might have warped a lot of little children who expected cute, fuzzy creatures and ended up seeing a microwaved gremlin, as well as hearing about the bizarre death of the girl's father at Christmastime. And yet, they keep allowing Chris Columbus to do films for children. When will they catch on that he really must dislike them, at least from what I've seen in his movies?
