I'm a bit torn between the Shawshank Redemption and American Beauty. I guess if I have to pick one, it would be the Shawshank Redemption.

Why?

The performances are excellent - Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman are both top notch actors.

The film is multidimensional. It provides insight into society and human nature, as prison movies often do. A prison is a condensed version of the world, and it shows people at their most extreme levels, stripped bare of many of the trappings of life that get in the way of who we are.

The story is also compelling on an emotional level. We watch a man lose everything in his life, and we see him punished unjustly. We see the best and worst of the human spirit. Some characters crumble, but others flourish - the main character in particular makes the most out of his life despite how absurd it has been. And in the end, he gets some of his revenge, and breaks free to live out his days by the sea.

It's just a great movie. The cinematography was done well, the casting was well chosen, the story is good, the feeling is captivating and relate-able. There aren't any bad moments. It's very much a classic. It can be watched over and over again.

American Beauty comes in second. Another film with really exceptional acting, a powerful story, interesting characters, and a very insightful look into humanity, though on a more individualistic scale. It's a beautiful movie. It only comes in second because I think it is a bit more of a modern movie, and is less relate-able than Shawshank. Not quite a classic. Still very good though.

edit.

I agree with the first answer, re: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. It does have a similar feel, and is also a great movie.

American Beauty is my all time favorite movie. Not only is it entertaining from beginning to end, but it gives a great window into the subtle happiness that pervades all life. It is one of those movies that make you happy and make you look at your life differently when you see it. Even the soundtrack is great.

Based on the titles you listed I also suggest "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind." It gives me the same feeling American Beauty does.

Little Miss Sunshine...because some dysfunctional families can be funny.

American Beauty because of the superb acting.

John Q. its a great story

Those are pretty good selections. Can't figure out which to choose, but John Q and The Notebook are the ones who can really make you cry. I had them and I can keep watching them over and over again and still feel emotional because they really touch your heart.

donnie darko, it is such an original story. You are like WTF is going on here??

American Beauty: Spacey played his role perfectly and the way they upped the colour contrast during his fantasy's just served to emphasis them. Also the ending showing he had moral limits was moving.

Either Little Miss Sunshine, or The Notebook for mee.

LMS is pretty much the most hilarious movie i have ever watched and they get through things as a family ,and i think its really cute. Then the Notebook.. well if any movie makes me cry, its a keeper (:

The Notebook, because I don't know...maybe because I love the message of the movie. It gives me the feeling of being in love. HAHA. With that movie, I realized that fate is really unpredictable. HAHA. =P

pirates of caribbean, jason borne movie

DONNIE DARKO

To me, it's a puzzle I'm still trying to solve after many viewings. I expect it to keep me analyzing for some time to come. It's a truly remarkable film that seems to be drawing more and more people to it, marking it a genuine cult film.

My first time through, I didn't think all that much of it~till I went to bed that night and lost sleep trying to get to the heart of this mystery. It isn't the muddled mess that some people declared it after one viewing. "Donnie Darko" demands that you watch it repeatedly.

Others on the list don't have that sort of draw for me.

Of course, my list of favorites would seem uninteresting to many people I'm certain. My favorites include:
Romeo & Juliet (1968)
The Outsiders
Dragonslayer
Gone With the Wind
Casablanca
Sky Captain & the World of Tomorrow
Educating Rita
and many, many more!

1.The Shawshank Redemption. The characters were engaging. It's a great story of adversity and perseverance.
2. I also liked Donnie Darko for its mind-****.
3. American Beauty. An interesting insight into a dysfunctional family.

The Notebook is a great love story that most people only dream about and for a hour and a half you get to live allie and noahs life..you lose yourself in it..all your problems go away..i can't begin to describe how it makes me feel.

definetly shawshank redemption

Little Miss Sunshine
