The film 'The Thing' with Kurt Russell?!

Question: At the end, when it is just him and Keith David left alive together, why do they just sit and wait for the end? Apologies if it's really obvious but it's been ages since I saw that film so it's all a bit vague.

Is it because there's no hope of rescue or because they aren't sure if one another is the thing? Surely though when the Thing is on it's own with a victim (e.g., no witnesses) it attacks without hesitation (as it did with the dogs) meaning that NEITHER of them was the Thing?

I know this is all confusing but any help appreciated!

Because one of them is possibly the THING and they could spread it to the rest of the world. The Thing was alone with several members during the story and didn't kill them. Also, they sort of ran out of options. Low on gear, and the only structure they had is burning to the ground.

When I first saw it, I was always under the impression that, sooner or later, The Thing would try rather than freeze to death. That a violent and inevitable outcome was moments away.

You might want to suggest your question at the IMDB FAQ page for The Thing! Link below. Evil Starsky's point about Childs' breath is discussed there too.

i theory is that the Thing may freeze before the human... even though both had passed the blood test, so......

1 point i read on a web page once was that David doesnt seem to have any breath whereas Russell blows out cold looking breath. I think that is more the way it was shot - ie it wasn't actually that cold and some special effect guys were using fans blowing over large blocks of ice and it was near David as much. OR David was the Thing & wasnt breathing or had cold breath as all things do.

Neither of them was the thing, but there are no escape options. Paranoia has both of them in it's grip, so each of them believe that the other is infected. The breath thing is nonsense, watch the movie closely and it can be seen. Both of the characters are 'good' men, they each know that the infection has to be stopped and cannot leave the antarctic....so lets just kick back and enjoy this here whisky...

If you watch the end of the film carefully again, you may notice one of the two, not letting cold breath from his mouth? This means that 'The Thing' is still living inside one these characters. Check out the film once again!
