What is the name of this b&w French film, where a young girl....?!

Question: ...who lives on a farm in the country with her parents helps an escaped prisoner hiding from the gendermeries? A young girl who seldom (or does not) speak always looks out onto a dark wheat field where a scarecrow is her main focus. One day while looking, she sees it move and believes it has come to life. In actuality it is a prisoner who has escaped. She hides him when the gendarmeries come to search the nearby homes for him. Subsiquently the man, kills the girl's parents when they find out about him and takes her to live in the city. In the next scene she is pleading from the bed of a small single room dwelling for him not to leave. He does and in the midst of trying to steal some food (or commiting a crime) he is shot dead. We do not know what happens to the girl. The shots of the field are so ominously shot, it gives a perfect balance of suspense and drama to the film. It almost feels like Robert Bresson style in Mouchete. It is set in the early 20s-40s. Maybe made in the 50s?
