Anyone else think Johnny Depp is WAY over rated?!

Question: Boy oh boy I know I'm gonna get some heat for this but I just gotta know. I like Johnny Depp and most of his movies and I think he is a good actor but he's not all everyone makes him out to be. He's only got like three charcters he does

1) he's got the Flamboyant whimsical character
2) he's got the shy backwards character
3) he's got the intense looking, somewhat creepy character (That's real close to his Flamboyant character)

Every role he plays is a slight variation from these three characters. But, what do I know....

I disagree Johny Depp gets some of the best and most original roles in Hollywood, look at Jack Sparrow, Edward Sissorhands or Willy Wonker. Many actors can be cast a similar characters because that is what the audience relate to about them, if there was a film with Bruce Willis in action fan will go to and if there was a film with Hugo Grant rom com fans will go to, it is just another way of selling films.

I don't care if he plays a house wife, he's still frickin HOT! hes as hot as he ever was on 21 jump street!

I love him. He knows what he's good at and what the people want to see him doing and makes millions of dollars off of that. Why wouldn't you act in the way that's going to net you the most cash, if you've already sold your soul to Hollywood anyway?

NO WAY! Johnny Depp is amazing! And I'm not just saying that because I'm a woman. I do think that he is attractive but I think that he plays any character well and he is the leading actor in some of my favorite movies. The only movie he did that I really didn't care for was "Secret Window". You're entitled to your own opinion though. : )

I'm not trying to start an argument here, but this is true of many other actors. Jack Nicholson is always crazy, Tom Hanks is the same character in a lot of his movies, Christian Bale is always intense and serious, Tom Cruise plays the same guy in a lot of his movies, Adam Sandler is off the wall and crazy, Sean Bean is almost always a villian.

Part of being an actor is knowing what your strengths are. Granted, many will try to do something different, but they will more than likely stick with what they're good at. In my opinion, the big hype over Johnny Depp is that he plays a GOOD whimsical character, which is hard to do without coming off as completely over-the-top or looking like a complete idiot. He's good with quirky characters and can play a nutcase without really taking it over the top. I mean, can you think of anyone else who could pull off Jack Sparrow without coming across as cheesy or moronic?
I am a big Johnny Depp fan, but I have noticed that he sticks with the same type of characters, but to be fair, so do the majority of actors in Hollywood. A truely versatile actor who can play everything well is a rare gem. In my opinion, the last one of those to come around was Cary Grant, and even he was better at comedy than anything.

No, Johnny's not overrated. Tim Burton is.

Not only is he the perfect looking man, he is a talented actor.

I agree. He is not attractive at all. He is always a creepy character.

No, I think he is a very versatile actor and does not seem to over-act as someone like for example Tom Cruise (aside from in ‘Collateral’ which I feel is his best roll by a long way) or Mel Gibson do. Just two that come to mind. Who else could have made such an unusual roll as "Scissor Hands" look as good as it did other than Johnny Depp?

Gonna have to disagree w/you on this one. He crawls into his characters' skins and inhabits them. I really think he's one of the great - if not the greatest - actor of his generation. I'm so glad he's settled down because it was my fear that he would drink/drug himself out of a career - and that would be a great loss to the movies, his audience, and little old me.

I don't think he's over-rated, but I do think that his image has unfortunately changed for the worse.

It used to be "Johnny Depp is a great actor" and post-Pirates, it's become "Johnny Depp is a great actor because he's so hot."

Somewhere, the emphasis changed from the originality of his performances to his "hotness." In some ways, he has become the very thing he tried to avoid becoming - a heartthrob.
