fill the 3 gallon, dump into 5 gallon.
fill 3 gallon again, dump into 5 gallon. 1 gallon left over in 3 gallon container.
empty the 5 gallon, dump the 1 gallon into the 5 gallon, fill the 3 gallon again, dump into 5 gallon. that's 4 gallons and bob's your uncle.

Fill the 3 gallon bottle full. Pour it into the 5 gallon bottle. Fill the 3 gallon bottle again and fill the 5 gallon up. This leaves you one gallon in the 3 gallon bottle. Pour out the 5 gallon, pour the one gallon from the 3 into it, then fill the 3 gallon bottle again and pour it into the 5 gallon.
4 gallons.

Fill the 3G and dump into the 5G. Fill the 3G again and dump into the 5G until it's full. There is now exactly 1G left in the 3G jug. Dump out the 5G jug and pour the remaining water left in the 3G jug into the 5G jug. Now fill the 3G jug once more and dump into the 5G to get 4G.
