I can't verify it yet...but given the scene in which the platoon looks for suspected Vietcong in a local village is said to be loosely based on the My Lai Massacre - I'd guess 1968 or 1969.

Well, they didn't specify an exact date and year. All I can tell you is that it takes place during the Vietnam War. The movie came our 1986, but like the guy said before me about the massacre, which happened in the late 60's.
