Why is Citizen Kane considered to be such a great film?!

Question: I've seen Citizen Kane a few times now, and I can't seem to understand all the excitement around it. Is it mostly because Orson Welles did almost everything in that movie or what?

Answers: I've seen Citizen Kane a few times now, and I can't seem to understand all the excitement around it. Is it mostly because Orson Welles did almost everything in that movie or what?

Because its simple. The acting is amazing from Welles. The deep focus photography used in it makes it seem real and unlike many films made before. The camera angles and close ups were very experimental for the time. The story is brilliant. The cast is is good, the writing is perfect. And the central enigma of Rosebud just drives the narrative. I love that movie. It just has everything.

It has many significant reasons, but one was the cutting edge of the perspective. There is a scene where he is a young boy outside, you can see him in the background through a window as the scene focuses inside; both dimensions are in perspective. This was new technology.

I've only seen it once but I think Orson Welles performance was excellent and the character is very interesting. Out of all the money and power he had in his life, the last word he udders is "Rosebud", the name of his childhood sled. That's probably the only true thing that made him happy in life. Not to mention the cutting edge camera angles, like that of the snow globe falling etc..

This was also thought to be a thinly veiled biopic about William Randolph Hearst, the newpaper magnate. Hearst did his best to squash the release of this movie and almost succeeded. The very fact that Hearst didn't want it released made people want to see it even more.

And although the word Rosebud in the movie was the name of Kane's sled, it was also Hearst's pet name for a certain part of his mistress' (actress Marion Davies) anatomy.

yeah i agree it was a good movie but i would not consider it the greatest movie of all time i mean theiur are so many aspects going into movies they have different genres and different time periods that makes it hard to say just one movie is THE greatest of all time i liked the movie and all but i would NOT call it the greatest movie of all time it was basicly about a presidents life and i mean it had some intersting twists still their is way too much that goes into a movie to call it the best ever i wouldnt even consider it one of my fav's

Because it was made in a time when there were no CGI, profanity on screen, mega egocentric actors, car crashes, dismemberment, large explosions to name a few.
The acting had to carry the movie and the story had to be good.
