National Lampoon vacation movies are not the worst movies I have seen by a long shot. Think I see where you are coming from, but maybe the studios would only give Chevy Chase comedies to do, who knows. Steve Martin has had some great performances, even if the movies were not always classics eg. Planes, Trains and Automobiles (with John Candy), Father of the Bride (has as much trouble with the inlaws as Ben Stiller in Meet the Parents), Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (with Michael Caine) and Parenthood. That is my opinion anyway, good luck.
A great Steve Martin movie? The Spanish Prisoner. There's also Parenthood, L.A. Story, and everything Superbad McLovin mentioned.
