I always wondered that, too. Perhaps Disney wanted his female lead characters to have the background of a terrible life to show that they had the strength to carry on through it. Also, maybe he wanted his own fans of his work, little girls, to realize that even if their own family was torn apart through divorce or even a loss of a loved one they could believe that it was indeed possible to make it through the situation. With a character to relate to, they would feel it wasn't so bad.

Just a random thought, really. I idolized Disney Princesses when I was little, and I still do. When you're small and things seem so big, you need some magic in your life to prove that things aren't so bad.

it's because he never new his mother, his mother died at an early age.

You have to remember that the movies Disney does are based on fairytales, legends and other stories that already have this set up. So, you're erring to say that this was Disney's choice.

These are the original tales, not Disney creations:
Snow White~mother dies in childbirth; father remarries
Sleeping Beauty~has both parents
Cinderella~widowed father remarries woman with two daughters
Aladdin~ruler has daughter; mother either deceased or part of a harem or a concubine
Little Mermaid~answers only to father in many versions; no mother shown
Bambi~from novel

I could continue like this. It's a tradition in storytelling. Children often are motherless or orphaned, mainly because women often died in childbirth or did not live long after.

So, don't slam Disney over ancient story traditions. Disney didn't do "The Little Princess", "Heidi", "Secret Garden", "Hansel & Gretel", and others in which children are minus one or both parents. There are a hundred other stories that have that basic theme.

all of the princess movies that wakt disney did himself, were grimm fairy tales. thats the way the stories went
