Ah, a marvelous question.

Grendel's mother has evolved quite a bit throughout the years. If you are consulting the original poem "Beowulf," she is not sexy or alluring. Actually, there are few descriptions of her to go on. The reader has no real idea what she looks like. All you know is that she's not happy her son died.

Jump ahead a few years to John Gardner's "Grendel." She's a big nasty monster in that book. Nothing sexy at all.

Jump ahead a couple more years to "The Tower of Beowulf" by Parke Godwin. Grendel's mom is the daughter of a trickster god and he casts a spell on her that makes her appear beautiful. She is so beautiful and alluring that she seduces a king who fathers Grendel. Her beauty is caused entirely by magic. Really, she's a big nasty monster.

Films are another story. There's a movie called "Beowulf" starring Christopher Lambert. In that movie, Grendel's mom is played by a former Playboy Playmate. She is so sexy, seductive, and alluring that she seduces Hrothgar and conceives Grendel. That is, of course, until you see her true form which is that of a big nasty monster.

In the more recent film "Beowulf and Grendel," she doesn't even exist, so that's not any help.

To really answer your question, Grendel's mom is an ambiguous character and is open for interpretation. Really, she could be anything and be true to the original epic poem.
