I don't remember. I do remember that movie sucked, so I wouldn't bother trying to find out.
In the movie, the clown did take a bite of pizza that looked like it was crawling with maggots.
I'm thinking those were props when he actually took a bite of the pizza.... maggots aren't very healthy to eat, as there is a lot of bacteria in and around them. The props people typically make something that looks like the bugs that an actor has to eat, but is made of foodstuff so it's safe to eat.
However, I watched the scene a few times when I first saw it (wondering the same question), and the camera cuts away when he sinks his teeth in..... so it's possible they were real and he spit everything out after the camera cut. The "behind the scenes" thing that they had on the DVD didn't say if he ate live ones or not, so it's impossible to say without finding someone who actually WAS behind the scenes ;-) LOL!
