To answer your question, I thought The Exorcist, and The Omen and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (the originals, not the remakes) were really scary.

most horror movies are just plain cheezy. however, there are two movies that did give me some unsettling dreams, but they're not really horror movies. just disturbing as hell:
