How do movie studios make their movies look "motion pictures"?!

Question: Besides the acting, I don't like to watch movies that look like home videos. It doesn't feel like "movie". The feel of realism is not there. This is the case for most low budget movies that only got released on DVDs. What is the process that major studios used to make their movies? Is it the editing process or the film that they used?

film stock definitely makes a difference 70 mm was the standard last time i checked.then you've got to have really good lenses and lighting. then you've got to have a kick-*** cinematographer. i know what you're talking about 'cause i'm old enough to remember when all television was shot on good film stock. it probably wasn't the first show to do it but"All in the Family" looked really weird to me.it was shot on videotape instead of film and a lot of sit coms followed suit. and gsme shows, of course. action shows continued to use film 'cause they knew their audience would compare them to movies and didn't want to lose them by looking cheap.

the equipment and training these movie makers have is about 200x more than anything you would have at home. also they have been trained for years in lighting and how to use camera angles to make the movies appear more realistic.
