now,this may be old school but when i lived in Hollywood it was common knowledge that EVERY agent had started out in some agencies mail room. i wonder if they even have mailrooms anymore.the other way i saw people get to work where everyone else wanted to, i.e. radio stations and record companies,you have to do it for free at 1st! it's called 'interning'. and i know that's still going on! if you work hard and are good, they'll start paying you eventually. meanwhile you 'get' to be a waiter or a bartender part-time, unless you have rich parents!waiters and bartenders can have flexible schedules and they make enough in cash tips to get along,but once again, you have to be good!as in, work your tail off!
Ray C above me is correct. The education will get you in the door, as an assistant or in the mail room. But hard work and determination will move you up the ladder, it is slave labor for a few years. But if the Entertainment business is in your blood then the long hours and low pay are the sacrifice you will be willing to make. And you have to move to Los Angeles and tolerate the 70 degree winters and liberal society.
