SPOILER ALERT:
THis was an excellent movie that deserves several viewings to be fully appreciated.
The entire movie was taking place inside the mind of Ashley Judd's character.
The motel room was a metaphor for the inside of her head.
The dillusional boyfriend represents her 'insanity'.
The ex-boyfriend (Harry Connick) represents her 'conflict'
The Dr. Sweet represents her 'sanity'.
Notice that none of the characters speak to the Harry Connick character EXCEPT ashley's character? That's because she's the only one who sees him.
The phone ringing at the begining was her re-living the moment she found out about her son, 10 years before. The concept of the movie is we get to watch her slowly lose her sanity as she suffers from her delusions. Oh, and the 'girlfriend' represents her 'devil's advocate'. Also, the way she looked beaten down was the way she saw herself. As for the feeling of the 'bugs' being everywhere, that's because it's the number one symptom of pcycosis and thus the story included it as the metaphor for her paranoias. She kept hearing the phone ring and then that paranoia turned into the feeling of bugs being everywhere. Enter her insanity (the new boyfriend) who represents 'where' the bugs come from and the planting, and then confirmation of her paranoid delusions. Then, at the end, when her 'insanity' wipes out her 'sanity' (new boyfriend kills Dr. Sweet) she totally slips into her psycosis where nothing is real, everything is delusion. And the only way she can get rid of her paranoia (and the pain of losing her son) is to get rid of the 'bugs'. The only way to get rid of the bugs is to burn everything in the room. To destroy her mind. So she sets the fire, which is the metaphor of her completely going mad. At the end, she doesn't die but simply slips into her own pychosis, never to return normal again, like real-life paranoid delusionists. This was a real thinker of a movie and not a movie about bugs at all, which most people thought they were going to see a movie about bugs and thus were confused and disappointed. Watch it again and you might find yourself saying it's one of the best movies you've ever seen. I know I did...lol Sorry for the information overload though, I hope things make a little more sense now :-)

Other people in the movie theater were yelling that they wanted their money back after it had ended. I never heard of the movie, but my boyfriend took me to see it, so I didn't have any sort of expectations
I thought she did an excellent role playing a white trash woman. She always plays pretentious characters, so this was a good change. Harry Connick Jr's part could have been played by anyone because it wasn't a huge role. Ashley Judd and the main guy did a great job though. I know white trash women exactly like that!
I thought it was an OK movie. Made me really think right up until the end that it was the military. Then to find out he was a wack job got me to thinking that there are really people out there with conditions like that. Trippe!
I thought it was a really good movie. I liked it becoming more and more frantic and culminating to them setting themselves on fire. It was just so disturbing someone could allow themselves to spiral downward someone else's delusions.

Yeah I own 5 copies of it. It could have been a lot better but oh well Spiderman 3 will be out soon.
the only descent part of this movie was seeing ashley judd naked. thats all i got out of it.
