Can a movie be advertised in theaters but never actually come to the theaters?!

Question: My friends and I were at the movies and we saw a trailer for a movie with Hillary Swank in it. It was a scary one, I think based in the south and there was a demonic child. She brought the plagues that moses did. But while we were sitting there watching this trailer I leaned over to my friend and asked what this movie was called and at that moment "Hillary Swank" flashed on the screen, in big letters, we laughed cause it looked like the title. So I guess the title of the move flashed while we were laughing cause I never saw it. But I also never heard of the movie again. Is it possible for a movie to advertised in theaters then never make it? I really don't think Hilary would spend her time doing a crap movie that would never make it.

The movie is called "The Reaping" But to answer your question, yes sometimes movies are released directly to DVD instead of in theaters.

Yes. But the movie you're refering to was called "The Reaping" and it did get a theatrical release. It just came out on DVD today.

Its possible the movie did make it to the theatre, but just in select areas. This happens a lot with movies, they aren't shown in all theatres... not even all states or cities.

I think the movie you are referring to in the reaping though

Yeah its possible they just advertise it but dont show it..

The Reaping was released in cinemas, briefly.

No its generally not likely that a movie is advertised in cinemas, then released to DVD.

Mostly DVD releases are small...or crap movies that the studios try to very quietly get on the shelf.
