At the beginning of the film, we know that Ed Norton is an unnamed employee for an Automobile Company. On a business trip he meets one Tyler Durden - an unusual soap salesman.

As the film progresses, Tyler and the Narrator establish a "Fight Club". However, as Tyler's fight clubs eventually become "Project Mayhem" and more destructive in their actions the two have an argument with Tyler disappearing from the Narrators life.

When one of the members gets killed on a mission (Bob) the Narrator finally decides that it cannot go on and to shut down Project Mayhem. Wishing to follow Tylers movements he looks over the country becoming increasingly disturbed through people recognising him and feeling that hes been to the places before; even being recognised as Tyler Durden by a man he sees.

At this point, he realises that Tyler is not a real person and is part of his alter ego or split personality if you like. This is backed up as Marla even refers to him as Tyler. The Narrator is then informed by him (when he appears randomly) in his room that he is in control of his nody when he is asleep. Later on, the Narrator tries to stop Tyler from blowing up some credit card companies buildings but is knocked out by Tyler and taken to another building close by to watch the destruction.

As he is held at gunpoint by Tyler he realises that as Tyler does not exist in reality it is just himself holding the gun. He shoots himself in the cheek in an effort to stop Tyler - (with his illusion killed).

The film ends with the Narrator and Marla watching the explosions. (We assume basically although Ed Norton is known as Tyler to the Project members still he will be free from Tyler in his mind).

he realises he has been imaging the whole thing from another point of view. He sees brad Pitt as someone else but he is the one organizing everything and he was like that to protect himself from himself.
